Celebrating 10 years of African Angels, with our partners Mercedes-Benz South Africa

As our principal and longest standing donor, it was only fitting we celebrated our 10-year anniversary with the team at Mercedes-Benz South Africa; making memories for our African Angels. We were privileged to be joined by the Mercedes-Benz South Africa leadership in Andreas Brand, CEO & Executive Director Manufacturing and Abey Kgotle, Executive Director of Human Resources & Corporate Affairs. They spoke passionately and resolutely of their company’s commitment to education, to African Angels and our shared belief that education changes the futures for our children.

The Mercedes-Benz Learning Academy and IT Hub created an interactive technology showcase for the grade 6 and 7 children with coding, virtual reality and robotics, to expose our older African Angels to new and different career opportunities they have never seen before.

While the Grade 6 and 7’s were making robots work, creating code and exploring the world of virtual reality, the rest of the children were engaged in pre-match soccer drills with the very energetic members of the Mercedes-Benz soccer team.

Deon Du Bruyn. Manager IT Hub, donated TANKS, a coding game that allows facilitators to introduce the much needed skill of coding, as a career choice, to South African learners of ages 10-14yrs.
We can’t wait to get started with it!

The highlight of the day for the children was the singing of the National Anthem, and the inaugural soccer match to be played for the MBSA Anniversary Trophy. With a bit of help from their MBSA team-mates, the African Angels team took the final score to a draw, and the match was decided in African Angels’ favour during a tense penalty shoot-out.

Each child enjoyed a hamburger and party pack for lunch; they had fun dancing to the music whilst cheering for “Uncle Max” and posing for photos and just like a real birthday party, everyone had cake at the end of the day.

Check out more of the action in the video prepared by MBSA to celebrate the day.
